How Often Should You Vacuum Your Carpet?

How Often Should You Vacuum Your Carpet?

If you have carpet in your home, you'll want to keep it as clean as possible. Over time, dust and dirt can get trapped in the fibers, which can wreak havoc on those who suffer from allergies. Dirty carpet also increases the risk of you and your loved ones getting sick. Here's our guide to keeping your carpet in top shape over the years.

General Vacuum Frequency Guidelines

To keep your carpet clean, you'll need to vacuum frequently, but the specific frequency depends on how much foot traffic each area gets.

  • High-Traffic Areas. For high-traffic areas, like your entryway and family room, you'll want to vacuum every day. If you have pets, you should vacuum their areas daily as well. This will get rid of any pet hair and dander, preventing it from floating around in the air you breathe.
  • Medium-Traffic Areas. Bedrooms, dining rooms, and playrooms get a fair bit of traffic each day. To keep them clean, aim to vacuum twice a week.
  • Low-Traffic Areas. For the rest of the carpeted areas in your home that don't get as much use, you should vacuum once a week. Dust and dirt from other areas can spread rapidly, so you'll want to vacuum even if you haven't used a particular room in a while, like guest rooms, formal living and dining rooms, and storage areas.

Vacuuming Tips

When you vacuum, it is best to take a methodical approach so that you don't miss any spots. Using a vertical motion, vacuum from one end of the room to the other, gradually working your way across. You should also make use of all the attachments that come with your vacuum. These tools are invaluable for getting into corners and edges, under furniture and other areas the main vacuum can't reach.

High-Traffic Areas. For high-traffic areas, like your entryway and family room, you'll want to vacuum every day. If you have pets, you should vacuum their areas daily as well. This will get rid of any pet hair and dander, preventing it from floating around in the air you breathe.

If your vacuum has an extendable arm or hose, you can also vacuum the tops of cabinets, bookshelves, and wardrobes. Over time, dust accumulates on the top of tall furniture, and because you don't often see the top, it can be easy to miss these areas when dusting. Vacuum any spider webs that have formed around the ceiling as well to minimize the risk of spider bites.

Use a High-Quality Vacuum

There are hundreds of vacuums on the market, and some are better than others. While a cheap vacuum may get the job done at first, it is likely of low quality and may not last long under heavy use. You're better off investing in a high-quality vacuum, as you'll get many more years of use out of it, not to mention better cleaning power.
